If you are anything like me, this is how it goes for you: You book your family photo shoot, you are feeling good about life and happy to finally have some updated family photos. Fast forward a couple of weeks and then the dreaded thought… what the heck are we going to wear?!?
Arguably the number one question I get asked is “What should we wear?”. Here are my top 5 tips for picking outfits out for you and your family.
1 START WITH MOM- I say this to all the mama’s that ask me… start with YOU! Lets be honest, if you are unhappy with how you look then you probably won’t like any of the images you see. We are infamous for picking ourselves apart aren’t we? Start with you and choose something that you feel is comfortable and flattering. Not to say you show up in your Lulu’s, but find something that you will be ok moving around in and that reflects your style.
2. THINK AHEAD - My goal is to deliver images to you that you will want to print out and display somewhere in your home. When choosing outfits, make sure you are choosing a color scheme and a look that you will be happy to see on your wall year round or even in years to come. I think there is a time and place for holiday sweaters but is that what you want to see on your wall in May?
3. MIX PATTERNS AND COLORS - Remember when it was trendy for everyone in the family to wear white shirts and jeans? I do! Well times have definitely changed and I actually don’t recommend that at all. I think mixing colors and patterns is good! However, too many patterns and colors can be overwhelming. My rule of thumb is to minimize patterns to just one or two pieces. Example, one of you wearing a plaid shirt and one of you in a soft stripe (not bold) and the rest of you in a solid.
As for colors, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. For a timeless look, try keeping a neutral color pallet. Think: grey, black, cream (better than white), brown and even blue. Personally, I love color. If you decide to go with more color, then keep in mind colors that compliment each other. Think: yellow and purple, blue and orange, red and green. (And please, whatever you do, do NOT wear neon! It does not photograph well. )
4. DONT FORGET THE SHOES! - Shoes are often the most forgotten element when styling but they can really make or break your outfits! Steer away from athletic shoes. Think: sandals, boots, flats, loafers… even Converse or a pair of Vans work too.
5. TEXTURE & ACCESSORIES - Texture is a great way to add depth and interest to your photos. Trust me, I am a sucker for a plain white tee, but in photos adding layers or textures really help make that photo. Think: chunky sweater, the material of your clothes, scarves. Accessories are also another way to take a photo to the next level and an easy way to add pops of color. Think: hat, scarf, cardigan/coat, jewelry (my personal fav :-)).
The most important take away is that if you aren’t comfortable with your outfits it will show in the images. Make sure you have chosen outfits that represent your family. The end goal for me is that you are happy with your photos! I am always here to help!
